The Guelph School of Art is a proud member of the Wyndham Art Supplies family. Our classes and workshops run year-round, with daycamps during March Break and the summer months. We have classes suited to both the beginner and seasoned artist in a range of media and specialties.

For more than 10 years the Guelph School of Art has reflected the dynamic visual art scene making our city unique. The GSA's team is made up of top notch instructors, many of whom have experience teaching at the university level. All bring passion for the creative process to our small classes.


The school is situated on the 3rd floor of our building at 125 Wyndham Street North, in Downtown Guelph. Our studio space boasts plenty of natural lighting and architectural interest. For a tour of our classroom drop by Wyndham Art Supplies Monday through Saturday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM.

In Store- Visit us at Wyndham Art Supplies, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. We accept cash, debit, cheque and all major credit cards.

When registering please have an emergency contact name and any special notes (allergies, medical conditions) ready for our registration process. We require a valid health card number for all children taking our classes.


All class fees include GST. Materials are not included in class fees unless otherwise noted. It is suggested you refrain from purchasing course materials until we can confirm classes have met minimum registration. Adult classes are suited to those ages 17 and up. DISCOUNTS

You will save 10% off your classes if you choose to take more than one class in a session. This discount also applies when 2 or more family members register for classes within the same session. We also offer a 10% discount by request for seniors aged 60 years up.

 

 

PRIVATE & SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS


We are pleased to offer private instruction for individuals and small groups. Lessons are developed with student input, with excercises and feedback provided by one of our top-notch instructors. Work for an hour or two weekly in the medium and direction of your choice. Please bring a sketchbook with you to each lesson to track progress and take any notes. All other materials will be recommended by your instructors as they pertain to your studies.


To enroll in a custom course, contact GSA Director Cara Collins to make arrangements with the instructor of your choice.

Fees:

An one-time administration fee of $25.00 will be charged for all new private lessons. This fee covers course scheduling, development and research. Lessons are $40.00 hourly per person, groups of 3 or more students working at a time will receive a reduced rate. Payments are arranged in advance, on a 6 week schedule.

Professional Models can be arranged for lessons with an additional model fee and advance notice.

This class is designed for primary students, in grades 1-4.

Join us as we explore our imaginations with a wide assortment of art materials. We’ll be learning new skills and honing old ones as we work on innovative 2D and 3D projects ranging from ‘dinosaur graveyards’ to veggie print portraits. Along the way, we’ll be talking about some really interesting artists and the things they did for inspiration. Mess comes along with the fun, so wear old clothes. DRAWING & PAINTING with Eileen MacArthur

This class is designed for students in grades 5-8.

Getting serious about art? This more advanced class examines the fundamentals of drawing & painting from techniques and tricks to the elements & principles of design. Students will learn techniques for brush handling, tonal drawing and composition. MARCH BREAK DAY CAMP: PAPER FRENZY!

Youth ages 7-12 will enjoy our adventure down the paper trail. This intensive fun & educational week combines learning about the history of paper; discovering its uses and how it's made along with various paper-based activities.


Students will make their own paper, learn simple bookmaking techniques, explore printmaking, paper sculpture, collage, origami & paper airplane folding, drawing, watercolour and more!


Dress for the weather as we will be taking a couple of group outings to gather materials for our projects and do some drawing outdoors.


Students should bring a lunch and a couple of snacks. Please do not pack any nut or seafood (shrimp, crab or imitation crab) products.

Have your party here at the Guelph School of Art! We offer customized art & craft parties for any and all celebrations!

Fees:

Parties start at $175.00 for up to 10 kids for a 3 hour event. We spend 2 hours working on projects and playing games, and have one hour for snacks, dancing and gifts. Add $15.00 for each additional guest (up to 16 total). Our price includes instructor and all materials. Food and drink not included in this fee.


Parties with 12 or more children will include a second instructor.


Looking for a more inclusive package? Let us take care of all the details with our new DELUXE PARTY. This package includes a Dairy Queen ice cream cake, cheese pizzas, juice and loot bags starting at $290.00 for 10 children, ask about additional guests.

RT CLUB


Join us the 2nd Friday each month for a great kids art night! Each night we'll do a new set of projects or single larger activity with kids while parents take an evening off. Projects and instructors vary each month, see schedule below. Groups of 3 or more friends who register together are eligible for our “family discount”, so make a night of it and bring your buddies!


Projects are designed for ages 6-13, no previous art experience necessary. Classes are $26.00 each, all materials included.

DRAWING BATMAN with David Caesar

It's the class you've all been waiting for! “How to Draw Batman!” will focus on the Dark Knight detective-his basic body type, posture, light and shadow effects and various costume designs. We'll look at other artists' interpretations and carefully examine what various drawing styles bring to the overall feel of the 'Caped Crusader'. This class will also be offered for adults Friday January 15th.

Teens will learn the fundamentals of drawing the figure as we introduce working from a live nude model. Students will learn professional conduct and gain confidence and focus as we examine the entire process from gesture drawing to building tonal mass. After this workshop students will be elligible to join our Open Life classes to continue to build their portfolios. Students under 18 years will require parent or guardian permission to attend this class, ask Cara Collins for details.

FASHION ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP with Stephanie Schirm

In this one-day class students will be focusing on the tools they need to create professional style fashion illustrations. Learn tricks to observe carefully and to hone your rendering skills, as you practice drawing people and garments from life. Experiment with applying and mixing different media to achieve stunning results in your representation of fashion drawings.

Artists work from a live nude model in the style and medium of their choice. Most choose to draw, but painting, sculpture and other media are welcome. Typically the group works through a series of short warm-up poses before settling into longer sustained poses. A group facilitator will direct the range of poses and sitting lengths. Both male and female professional models take part. Group limit is 10 artists. This class always fills up fast. Sorry, no drop-ins. Please refrain from using solvents in this class.

*Recommended for those with previous figure drawing experience.

DRAWING ONE: Learning to See with Eileen MacArthur

This class is about learning the fundamental principles of drawing. Whether you are new to drawing or have some experience, the in-class exercises will help you to develop and heighten your observational skills. Working primarily from a still-life, there will be many opportunities for variation and experimentation. Each class will end with a short group critique. Optional homework exercises will be assigned. Please bring in any previous drawings for feedback from Eileen or the class.


MATERIALS: 2B, 4B and 6B pencils, kneadable eraser, vinyl eraser, black conté sticks, soft compressed charcoal sticks, 18” x 24” newsprint pad, all purpose sketchbook (any type or size). Students who wish to work on higher grade paper may use any rag paper that is no smaller than 18” x 24”.

 

INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED DRAWING with Eileen MacArthur

Similar to our previous 'Drawing Two', Intermediate and Advanced Drawing is structured to allow for self-directed study in drawing. In-class exercises will include abstraction, mark-making, determining scale and selecting materials, as well as comtemporary and historical approaches to drawing. Students will devise one or several projects to complete over the 6 week course, and each class will provide individual and group critique. Participants are encouraged to bring a subject to work from, such as an unfinished or unresolved work, a photograph or still life object(s), however the GSA will have a selection of objects from which you may choose to work.


MATERIALS: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B pencils, sharpener, kneadable eraser, vinyl eraser, sketchbook or sketching paper (at least 8”x11”), one sheet of rag drawing paper such as Stonehenge, photos or still life object(s), and other dry or wet drawing materials you may wish to use, including but not limited to charcoal, ink, watercolor, graphite etc.

    Additional materials may be required as you determine your own project.

 

BOTANICAL DRAWING with Eileen MacArthur


6 WEEKS, TUESDAYS, MARCH 2 – APRIL 13, 9:00 – 12:00 AM, $180.00

This class will focus on the techniques and aesthetics of botanical and flower study drawings. We will be looking at the work of historical and contemporary artists from Albrecht Durer to Jim Dine. Over the six week course, we will work on a series of studies in various media as well as a completed final drawing. There will be group and individual critiques and in-class exercises incorporating a range of materials including pencil, ink and watercolour. We will be working from both real and artificial flowers as well as existing drawings/etchings and photographs.


MATERIALS: HB, 2B pencils, sharpener, kneadable eraser, vinyl eraser, india ink and pen with drawing (thin line) nib, Watercolour in burnt umber, gouache in white, sketchbook or sketching paper (at least approx. 8”x11”), one sheet of Stonehenge paper or any rag paper suitable for drawing in wet/dry media.

    Optional: Please bring any other illustration media you wish to try as well as any additional watercolour or gouache paints.

 

PORTRAIT DRAWING with David Caesar


6 WEEKS, TUESDAYS, MARCH 2 – APRIL 6, 7:00 – 10:00 PM, $180.00


Learn the art and science of portraiture in this fun and challenging class. We will cover basic structure and proportions of the head and face while studying shape and form. Students will learn to draw both from life and from photographs using “sighting” and measuring techniques. Your portraits will come alive with the help of light, shadow and colour.


MATERIALS: Sketchbook 11”x14” or larger, HB pencil and sharpener or 0.5 technical pencil, kneadable eraser, Staedtler Mars vinyl eraser and a 12” stainless steel ruler.

*Recommended for those with experience drawing.

 

HIGH REALISM with David Caesar


6 WEEKS, TUESDAYS, MARCH 2 – APRIL 13, 1:00 – 4:00 PM, $180.00

Inspired by the art of Alex Colville, Ken Danby, Christopher Pratt, Walton Ford and Jeremy Smith, this advanced class examines the skills and techniques usde to create highly realistic drawings and paintings. David will help you create one image through either drawing or painting. Discussions will include chosing reference materials, surface preparation, image transferring and drawing and painting processes.


MATERIALS: For the first night please bring; a sketchbook (9”x12” or larger), an HB pencil and sharpener or 0.5 mechanical pencil, white vinyl eraser and 12” stainless steele ruler, also please bring your own photographs to work from, or images you have permission to use. Depending on your choice of medium the instructor will expand this list during the first class.

 

STUDYING THE FIGURE with Marion Manning


6 WEEKS, THURSDAYS, MARCH 4 – APRIL 8, 7:00 – 10:00 PM, $230.00


A great introduction to drawing the human figure. Lessons include proportion, anatomy and methods to give your work physical volume and emotional depth. You will work with a range of live nude models and poses as you develop your skills. Professional conduct for working with models will be adressed in early classes. After completing this course, students are encouraged to continue to build skills in our Open Life classes which run each season at the Guelph School of Art.


MATERIALS: 18”x24” paper pad (newsprint or bond), 2B, 4B and 6B pencils, soft compressed charcoal, vinyl eraser, kneadable eraser. Optional: graphite sticks, pastels, watercolours, ink.

This course is ideal for those who have never painted before, those returning to painting and those looking to hone their skills. Choose what you want to paint; portraits, landscape, still life, abstracts or work with suggestions from the instructor. Marion will introduce paint handling techniques, colour theory, composition, perspective, some ‘tricks of the trade’ and more. Each student will receive individual instruction weekly, helping you to develop your skill level and increase your familiarity with your chosen medium.


MATERIALS FOR OIL PAINTING: 9”x12” genuine canvas pad, palette paper pad, small metal palette knife, oil paints (alizarin crimson, cadmium red, ultramarine, cerulean, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow medium, either zinc OR titanium white, and burnt umber), 75 ml Liquin, #4 and #8 natural bristle filbert brushes recommended to begin, brown charcoal pencil, cotton rags and, a piece of masonite either 8”x10” or 9”x12”.

DO NOT BRING SOLVENTS.


MATERIALS FOR ACRYLIC PAINTING: 9”x12” genuine canvas pad, palette paper pad, small palette knife, acrylic paints (alizarin crimson, cadmium red, lemon, cadmium yellow medium, ultramarine, cerulean, white and black), flat #8 and round #4 synthetic brushes, brown charcoal pencil, and a piece of masonite either 8”x10” or 9”x12”.

ADVANCED TOPICS IN PAINTING with Eileen MacArthur

This class explores the finer points of applying your painting knowledge and experience to your work. Designed in response to the growing number of Guelph School of Art 'graduates' wanting more, the format will be driven by the students with a heavy focus on lots of studio work time and group critique. In-class exercises will include advanced colour theory, paint handling and application, form and composition. The work of historical and contemporary painters will be studied and discussed as a means of problem-solving in your own work. Please bring in any unfinished paintings that you wish to resolve as well as any source material that you have been hoping to turn into artwork, but have had difficulty deciding how to begin.


MATERIALS: Any wet or dry media that you feel comfortable working in such as oil, acrylic, watercolour, graphite, etc. Please bring in any and all materials that you wish to use or try. Eileen will also make suggestions on what specific materials may be useful on an individual basis. DO NOT BRING SOLVENTS.

Learn and experiment with a range of techniques. This class is an ideal continuation for previous watercolour students, or a great way to get started in watercolour painting. Lessons focus on creating washes, colour mixing, colour theory, masking techniques and more.

Discover and cultivate your unique style using watercolours. This class combines advanced technical lessons with self directed study. Students are encouraged to try a variety of watercolour applications to develop individual expression. While cultivating your personal style you will pick up new techniques, gain a greater understanding of colour, and learn to strengthen your compisitions. Subject matter is dictated by the individual. This class is recommened for those with experience working with watercolour.

LEARNING FROM THE MASTERS: Impressionism & Post Impressionism with Phil Irish


8 WEEKS, THURSDAYS, JANUARY 14 – MARCH 4, 9:30 – 12:00 PM, $190.00


Do you want gain a greater knowledge of the mysterious techniques used by the Masters?  Students will learn by reproducing paintings from the Impressionist (ie. Monet, Pissaro) and Post Impressionist (ie. Van Gogh) periods. Step by step processes will be discussed and demonstrated, along with colour theory. Students may work in either oil or acrylic. Students may bring a piece in mind for the first class, Phil will also have some images for inspiration.

*Optional- Students may wish to take a a field trip as a group to the AGO on Saturday January 23rd, cost and details to be discussed during first day.


MATERIALS: Bring what you have from previous painting classes and Phil will also make suggestions. DO NOT BRING SOLVENTS.

ART SMORGASBORD with Marion Manning

Art Smorgasbord offers the opportunity to sample a wide range of art media. Join Marion in six sessions of art making, working with watercolour, printmaking (linocuts and monoprints off glass), acrylic and oil painting, sculpture (clay, carving and creating masks) and drawing media including chalk pastels, conté, pencil and India ink. ORIENTAL BRUSHSTROKES with Roslyn Levin


8 WEEKS, THURSDAYS, JANUARY 14 – MARCH 4, 12:30 – 3:00 PM, $190.00


Oriental brushstroke painting or Sumi-e (which means black ink picture) is a beautiful, elegant and challenging non-toxic painting technique on mulberry (rice) paper or silk, using specifically-designed handmade brushes and ink from pine or vegetable soot. Students will learn all of the basic brushstrokes needed for this style and will create paintings of traditional subjects, such as bamboo and lotus. Learning the importance of white space, strengthening brushstrokes and understanding the value of simplifying subjects will influence students’ approach to all art forms. The teacher takes her work seriously, but not herself. Get ready for lots of laughter!!


MATERIALS: 2 paperweights, 1 roll of 18” high quality mulberry paper, medium size bamboo brush, Chinese ink stick and stone, 1 piece of wool felt 19”x25”, small white palette/saucer, 1 small square of white cotton cloth.

Experienced Sumi-e painters welcome.

WORKSHOPS

 

THE ART OF ENCAUSTIC with Andrea Bird

*MAXIMUM 8 STUDENTS


SATURDAY APRIL 17, 10:00 AM- 4:00 PM, $170.00


This intensive one-day workshop is designed for those who have an interest in learning basic encaustic techniques. Andrea will demonstrate the ways in which paint can be applied and fused, and how to make encaustic medium.  A variety of substrates (boards, canvas and paper) will be available to facilitate experimentation.  We will explore building up the surface texture, as well as gouging and scraping. Each student will be encouraged to layer colour -using opaque and transparent paints- and build interest with the inclusion of collage elements (found objects, organic elements of photographs). Course fee includes a materials fee paid to the instructor. Students are encouraged to bring any small elements that may wish to include in their collage, or photographs to be copied.

DRAWING/PAINTING WATER AND ROCKS with Eileen MacArthur


SUNDAY APRIL 18, 12:00 – 5:00 PM, $90.00


This workshop will give the artist some hints and tips for drawing or painting water and/or rocks. These difficult subjects will be broken down in order to simplify their representation. Instruction will begin with graphite, and then move to paint. Please bring in any images or photographs of water and rocks that may have proved difficult in your past artworks. Also please bring in any unresolved artworks that may benefit from further study. Dress for the weather as we’ll head outdoors for a closer look at our subjects. *Drawing experience recommended.


MATERIALS: 2B, 4B and 6B pencils, knead able eraser, vinyl eraser, sketchbook. Please also bring in your choice of wet media supplies such as watercolour, ink, oil or acrylic paint, brushes and supports. (Please note that wet media are optional).

 

ORIENTAL BRUSHSTROKES WORKSHOP with Roslyn Levin

You've asked, we've listened! Join Roslyn for a workshop version of her popular daytime Oriental Brushstrokes course. Oriental brushstroke painting or Sumi-e (which translate to black ink picture) is a beautiful, elegant and challenging non-toxic painting technique on mulberry (rice) paper or silk, using specifically-designed handmade brushes and ink from pine or vegetable soot. Much like our multi-week Sumi-e class, Roslyn will teach you some basic brushstrokes and the importance of white space, and the simplification of forms.


MATERIALS: 2 paperweights, 1 roll of good quality 18” wide mulberry paper, Chinese ink stick and stone OR liquid black ink, 2 small white palette/saucers, 1 small piece of absorbant cloth (discarded t-shirt or sheet).

 

SCREENPRINTING with Roisin Fagan


SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, $100.00


This jam-packed workshop covers the basics of screenprinting. Learn about stenciling, mixing pigments, screen prep, using drawing fluid and screen filler and more. Paper and pigments will be available for in class use. Roisin will discuss printing on fabrics and simple steps for creating a repeat. Course fee includes a 10” x 14” screen and a squeegee for you to keep*. Please come prepared with drawings or reference imagery to work from. MATERIALS INCLUDED.


OPTIONAL: Students may wish to bring a new washed T-shirt or flat weave tea towel for printing on.

ORIGAMI BASICS with Marion Manning

This class is suitable for those age 13 and up.



SUNDAY, MARCH 7, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, $65.00


This one day workshop will give you a basic understanding of origami (paper folding) as you learn simple techniques and then build upon them. Create a range of animals and objects for you to take home along with written instructions for everything that we have made.  This ancient Japanese skill enthralls both young and old and rewards simple effort with beauty. PAINTING SKINTONES with Marion Manning


SUNDAY, MARCH 21, 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM, $75.00


Perfect for painters interested in portraits and/or figures, this workshop specifically deals with how to paint skin. We’ll start with learning to mix a range of skin colours and move on to using tones within those skin colours to build believable, volumetric faces and body parts.

MATERIALS: Oil paints in the following colours: white, burnt umber, medium cadmium yellow hue, medium cadmium red hue, alizarin crimson, ultramarine and yellow ochre; brushes suitable for oil painting filbert #4 and #8 recommended (or any brushes you currently own), palette paper, canvas board or stretched canvas 16” x 20” or larger.

 

MIXED MEDIA COLLAGE 2 with Sandra Spagnuolo

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 10:00 AM- 4:30 PM $90.00


Spend a day creating a series of interesting mixed media pieces, on and off the canvas. Sandra will be mixing up an entirely new selection of techniques for this second mixed media course.  Stretch your creative comfort zone and play in new ways through drawing and waterbased media. This course requires no experience and promises to be a fun and relaxing exploration of a variety of materials.

PENCIL CRAYONS with Austin Gibson

Suitable for those age 13 and up.


SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 11:00 AM- 4:30 PM $85.00*


Let your imagination soar in this short but sweet introduction to pencil crayons. Austin will show you the fine art of sketching, blending and shading all in one day. He will begin with some simple pencil handling, moving on to colour blending and then shading techniques. Choose your subject matter or bring an image or two as references. Course fee includes a kit with 12 Prismacolor Premier pencil crayons, two marker blenders and one black felt tip pen*.

WATERCOLOUR: TERRIFIC TREES with Karen Kesteloot

Love watercolour? Love landscapes? Join us for this great one-day workshop creating terrific trees. Traditional and experimental techniques will be explored; play with dripping, spritzing and straw blowing, incorporating controlled wet-in-wet and dry brush techniques. We will also learn how to mix a variety of pleasing greens for painting nature's finest.


MATERIALS: Watercolour paints- Cadmium Yellow, Sap Green, Hooker's Green, Burnt Umber and any other colour you already own, #4 round, #6 round, 1” flat wash sable or mixed synthetic/sable brushes*, round divided palette with sloped sections, 1/4” white talkon angled chisel brush, rubber cement pick-up eraser, sea sponge, small spray bottle, pencil, white vinyl or kneadable eraser, 1 sheet of 140lb cold press 100% rag watercolour paper.

 

BOOKBINDING with Cara Collins


SUNDAY APRIL 25, 11:00 AM- 5:00 PM $85.00


Build two books in this one day workshop. You will have the opportunity to build both a soft cover book and an open spine hard cover book. Both projects have an exterior decorative stitch technique. The books are both beautiful and functional. The workshop will touch on techniques for making your books archival and how to make alterations to size and cover stocks. Some materials required.


MATERIALS: Medium duty awl, bone folder, pencil, eraser, metal ruler minimum 15”, 2 decorative papers no smaller than 18”x24”, 1 heavy-weight decorative handmade paper to be used as a soft cover.

 

PAPER QUILTING with Sandra Spagnuolo


SATURDAY, APRIL 10, 10:00 AM- 4:00 PM $85.00


Paper lovers and quilters alike will love this new workshop. Come join us for a fun and fabulous day of creating art quilts.  Whether you are picking up a needle for the first time or a skilled seamstress, this class is for you.  Create a finished piece using a beautiful selection of papers, beads and embellishments and learn new techniques in the process.


Materials: A variety of decorative printed papers, handmade papers and embellishments are already included for the group to use. students are encouraged to bring a portable sewing machine and any beads, buttons or notions they may want to work with. If you don't have access to a machine, one will be available for sharing in class along with resources for several hand stitching techniques.

 

FRIDAY NIGHT ART


Introducing our new workshop series, Friday Night Art is a set of individual classes running the 3rd Friday each month. Projects and instructors vary, see schedule below. Groups of 3 or more who register together are eligible for our “family discount”, so make a night of it and bring your friends!

HOW TO DRAW BATMAN! with David Caesar

It's the class you've all been waiting for! “How to Draw Batman!” will focus on the Dark Knight detective-his basic body type, posture, light and shadow effects and various costume designs. We'll look at other artists's interpretations and carefully examine what various drawing styles bring to the overall feel of the 'Caped Crusader'. This class also offered for youth Friday March 12th.

PAPERMAKING with Sandra Spagnuolo

In this class explore the art of papermaking by creating a unique collection of textured organic pieces that will translate wonderfully into your artwork. Emphasizing a loose, “try anything” approach; we will create a range of handmade papers. This class emphasizes the use of recycled material, natural and safe practices and an organic approach. Sandra will touch on archival and sizing concerns, and explain a variety of approaches to papermaking.

Learn to control a common watercolour mishap into a creative and unique effect. Learn about mineral and modern pigments, fluid vs. heavy body acrylics, gels, mediums, pastes and creating grounds for digital applications or other media. Discover how to control drying times and products and techniques to create textured surfaces. Participants will leave full of inspiration and a greater understanding of the versatility in acrylics!

Cara Collins

Cara Collins is a graduate of Sheridan College's Crafts & Design textiles program, she attended the University of Western Ontario for Visual Arts and Art History, and London's Bealart program out of H.B. Beal Secondary. Her work has been seen in the University of Western Ontario's Annual Juried Exhibition and as part of 'She's Crafty' at Arta Gallery in Toronto, Ontario.

 

 

Roisin Fagan

Roisin Fagan is coming to us from NSCAD University where she taught their Intro to Screenprinting after completing her BFA in 2005. Her Bespoke Uprising line of hand-dyed, hand-printed, and hand-embellished goods have been shown at Toronto's Christmas and Spring One of a Kind Shows, at the Halifax Crafters shows (which she co-founded in 2005), Toronto's Outdoor Art Exhibitions, Vancouver's Circle Craft Market, Cabbagetown Arts & Crafts Sale and most recently at the London Indie Media Fair. Phil Irish

Phil Irish has a BA in Fine Art and English Literature from the University of Guelph. He has exhibited extensively across Canada and the United States, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, the Longdale Gallery in Toronto and the Tom Thompson Memorial Art Gallery in Owen Sound. Phil was an Artist in Residence in Newfoundland, Quebec and the City of Kitchener. He has been teaching painting since 1999, at the Art Gallery of Ontario, with the Ontario Arts Council’s “Artists in Education” program and with the Guelph School of Art. Karen Kesteloot has a BA in Fine Art from the University of Guelph, has a Diploma of Commercial Interior Design from Humber College and has also studied at Parson’s Paris and the Art Institute of Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, Italy. She is an experienced art educator having worked and trained in adult education at Sheridan College. Karen has diverse skills in numerous fine and applied arts. Her experience includes watercolour, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, pottery, oil painting, egg tempera, dry media like pastels, pencil crayon and marker. Karen shares her knowledge effectively by creating  a positive student-focused learning environment. She helps each student bring out their unique creative voice via acquiring the technical skills necessary for free and unencumbered expression.

 

 

Roslyn Levin

Roslyn Levin has painted in Japanese Brushstroke or Sumi-e technique for 30 years, with exhibitions in Canada, China and Japan. Her work is in collections including: the City of Ottawa, Canada, the U.S., Britain, The Netherlands and Australia. She has shown for the last four years at the McMichael Gallery and received numerous awards, including the Ruth Yamada Award, first prize at the Sumi-e Artists of Canada annual exhibit. Recently Roslyn was featured in In the Hills Magazine. Her work can be seen at Burdette Gallery, www.burdettegallery.com, Dragonfly in Orangeville and Glen Willow in Rosemont. Eileen MacArthur

Eileen MacArthur completed her Masters in Painting at the University of Guelph and received a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Eileen has had exhibitions in Halifax, Calgary, Toronto, Buffalo N.Y, Chongqing, China and Guelph's MacDonald Stewart Art Centre. Eileen has taught classes at the University of Guelph, the Elora Centre for the Arts and for several years at the Guelph School of Art. In 2009 her work was included in the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery biennial, "Some Kind of Wonderful". Marion Manning

Marion Manning holds a Specialized Honours BA in Fine Art from the University of Guelph and a M.F.A. from the University of Waterloo. She has shown at the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre in Guelph, Gallery 44 and the Propeller Centre in Toronto, and the Confederation Centre in Charlottetown among other venues in Canada and the States. Her work is in corporate and private collections including the permanent collection of the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre. Marion uses a variety of media in her own work including oils, acrylics, printmaking, photography and digital art. Her teaching background includes the University of Waterloo, the Upper Grand District School Board and the Guelph School of Art.

 

 

Stephanie Schirm

Stephanie Schirm has spent the last 16 years focusing primarily on Liturgical type art (worship space decorum or vesture). In the non-religious spectrum she has become recognized for her portraiture work and vibrant tapestries that mainly depict the female form. Stephanie’s knowledge of tapestries is to a great extent influenced by her European training in fashion Design, as well as, formal training in Illustration & Design at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Sandra Spagnuolo

Sandra Spagnuolo is a mixed media artist working primarily in hand made papers, using recycled and reclaimed materials. Her paper quilts have appeared in both Quilting Arts and Cloth Paper Scissors magazines. She has shown at the International Quilt Festival in Chicago for the past two years and the Milton Art Festival. Sandra studied Fibre Arts at Sheridan College and has taught workshops in Milton, Oakville and Georgetown.

 

 

Kirsten Stoll

Kirsten Stoll is a recent graduate of the University of Guelph's Studio Art program, specializing in printmaking and painting. She has participated in the University's Annual Juried Art Show, the Print Studio's annual show and sale as well as Downtown Guelph's Art on the Street 2008 and 2009. Kirsten has shown in the Zavitz Gallery in Guelph and the Artspace Gallery in Peterborough. Kirsten has been instructing GSA parties and team building courses for kids and adults since early 2008.

WHERE IS THE GUELPH SCHOOL OF ART?

The GSA studio is on the third floor of Wyndham Art Supplies, 125 Wyndham St. North in Downtown Guelph. You can access our classroom through the store during store hours (Monday-Saturday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM), or afterhours through the GSA door, just next to the main entrance at Wyndham Art Supplies. If you have further questions about accessibility please give us a call.



WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR ENROLLMENT IN CLASSES?

Popular classes often fill quickly so it's advised to sign up as soon as possible. To avoid class cancellation due to lack of enrollment, please register one week prior to the first class. Once we have met our minimum enrollment we are happy to take late registrations should space still be available.



WHEN WILL I KNOW IF A CLASS IS CANCELLED?

You can assume your class is running as scheduled unless you hear from us. Classes are cancelled no later than 4 days before start date. In the event of class cancellation for lack of enrollment, you may select an alternate class or we are happy to refund all fees in full.

HOW STRICT ARE YOUR AGE RECOMENDATIONS?

Adult classes are recommended for those age 17 and older, with some flexibility. Students who are slightly older than the published age range of our kids classes are welcome to join the younger group as they feel comfortable. In fairness to our instructors and other students, we cannot include those younger than the published age range in any of our youth classes.



WILL THE STORE BE OPEN DURING MY CLASS?

Wyndham Art Supplies is open 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. If you require materials for your evening class and cannot make it to the store in time we can make arrangements by phone to have your shopping done for you in advance, as long as you call before 4:00 PM on the day of your class, or 4:00 PM Saturday for a Sunday class.



WHERE CAN I PARK DOWNTOWN?

We recommend you park in the Baker Street Lot during class hours. Payment is required between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM Monday - Saturday. After 6:00 PM parking is free. For more information on parking please see the City of Guelph Downtown Parking information at www.guelph.ca/living.cfm under “discover downtown”.

We reserve the right to cancel classes that don’t meet our minimum enrollment requirements. To ensure classes run we strongly recommend you enroll at least 10 days prior to a course’s start date. In the event of a class cancellation, notice will be given by phone and/or email to students four days prior to start date. Students will be refunded fees in full upon cancellation by the Guelph School of Art. Fees are otherwise NON-REFUNDABLE. No refunds will be given for classes missed or drop-outs.
