Materials: Making Sense of Plants

These products have been suggested by your instructor for use in class. Please note that these are just examples of appropriate materials, and there are many more choices available in our store.

  • Pencils
  • medium to large sketchbook
  • at least ten sheets of min 8.5"x11" canvas paper or watercolour paper
  • rags
  • assortment of brushes: including #0 or smaller detail round, 1" or larger wash, #4-#10 flat, #6-10 round
  • 2 large containers for water, or jars with lids if painting with oils
  • gel medium (if acrylic) or solvent free gel (if oil)
  • acrylic paint or oils (if you are a beginner, choose acrylic)

Recommended colours: At minimum a true magenta, cyan, cool yellow (such as lemon, azo, hansa, imidazolone etc), black and white. A wider range of useful pigments may include: alizarin crimson, cadmium red light or vermilion, dioxazine violet, pthalo blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, prussian blue, pthalo green, sap green, permanent green, viridian, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow medium, indian yellow, yellow ochre, raw umber, burnt sienna.

OPTIONAL: stretched canvas, board, or any surface you would like to paint on brushes: 10/0 spotter, any rigger, assortment of brush shapes in larger sizes.
