In this class, we cover the basics of oil painting: brush work and other paint application techniques; colours and colour mixing; understanding painting mediums; underpainting; preparing a painting support - including stretching a canvas; and care of brushes and other tools. Participants will work towards painting a small still life or portrait.
Materials List:
- Paint: titanium white, ivory black (or any black), primary or lemon yellow, magenta, cyan, yellow ochre, cad yellow, cad red, ultramarine blue (or at least white, black and three primaries).
- Two glass containers with lids. (jam jars for e.g.)
- Brushes: A selection of sizes and types. Suggested: 1” flat, bright or filbert; 1” or #12 round; #8 round and flat/filber/bright (maybe different from the big one to have some variety of brush shape); #2 and #4 round.
- Painting Tools: palette knives (at least two -flexible, triangular and medium-sized).
- Rags or shop clothes
- Palette – disposable or otherwise.
- Supports: four 9” x 12” or larger canvas boards; one larger scale canvas, canvas board or gessoed panel for final painting.
- *Canvas stretcher bars, canvas, and a small container of gesso if you want to learn how to stretch a canvas.
