I paint people experiencing instances of self-awareness; moments of ensnared relief and optimistic reflection in which they recharge and heal themselves. I enjoy painting these emotions playing on their faces, striving for them to have a life of their own. These images reveal the psychological processes of the individuals portrayed, inviting the viewer into their world. Taking a new approach to portraiture, I paint faces and gestures that communicate thoughts and emotions via the internet, particularly between mothers and their adult children who live far away. I believe that each portrait I paint is an affirmation of the life of the subject. My work has been influenced by the portraits of Velasquez and Sargent, and in the modern era, Burton Silverman and Daniel Greene, with whom I studied. While achieving a strong likeness is central to my work, I strive to reveal each sitter’s inner qualities with warmth and respect. People are simply fascinating, and to me the human face is an endlessly compelling landscape. I work directly in oil on canvas or panel. My process begins with careful observation and conversation with the sitter, and after exploring the subject through loose studies, I settle on a pose. The portrait develops over several sittings, using photographic reference when necessary. I am proud to have painted distinguished doctors, lawyers, academics, professional musicians and authors, I also take great pride in using portraiture to capture the stories of the “ordinary” people I cross paths with in my life and work.
