“Right where you are” is a collection of works from four Guelph emerging artists exploring identity, intimacy, and everyday moments. Each artist uses material, colour, and value to challenge representations of the body within fine arts. The works respond to each other by creating a dialogue about what it means to experience the everyday, and how that experience changes when social constructs become less rigid or fall away altogether. The human body is universally understood. Unified. We instinctively read posture, gesture, and proportion as visual cues to convey complex ideas without being dependent on words. Drawing, painting, mixed media, and cyanotype are each used to create a window into the nuanced experiences of daily life. Informed by lived experiences, “Right where you are” is a reflection on intersectional identity and what parts of ourselves are acceptable to show to the world.
Ray Fleming is a multidisciplinary Guelph based artist creating artwork about Queer subculture, kink, and the aesthetics of eroticism. Developing detailed focus on the materiality of leather and its iconography. Beck Stanbra is Cyanotype artist based in Guelph, Ontario. His work uses Cyanotype on a variety of materials to showcase intimate and vulnerable experiences of everyday queer life. He finds particular interest in challenging the line between public and private life, showcasing tender and private experiences on a large scale that is inescapable for the viewer. Chelsea Moore is a textile artist and painter based in Toronto. She enjoys the idea of “doing nothing” and exploring representations of female rest. Using thread as a substitution for line, she draws true-to-scale images of women on self-drafted patterns. Bella Lánci is an interdisciplinary artist currently based in Guelph, Ontario. Working mainly in photography, printmaking, and installation, she explores the body in relation to queerness and the concepts of identity vs expression. Baring herself in every aspect to the viewers through each piece, she intends to evoke conversation and witness, while refracting the voyeurism of the viewers' gaze back at them.Instagram: @blahrt.lanci1.
