Beginning with an exploration of a variety of acrylic painting techniques and mediums, participants will use their discoveries to develop compositional strategies in the making of abstract paintings. Colour mixing and colour theory, and a brief history of the various strands of abstract painting and a discussion of a selection of contemporary abstract painters will also be covered.
Acrylic Painting Class Supplies
- Paint: titanium white, ivory black (or any black), primary or lemon yellow, magenta, cyan, yellow ochre, cad yellow, cad red, ultramarine blue (or at least white, black and three primaries).
- Gel medium or matt medium
- Brushes: A selection of sizes and types. Suggested: 1” flat, bright or filbert; 1” or #12 round; #8 round and flat/filber/bright (maybe different from the big one to have some variety of brush shape); #2 round.
- Painting Tools: palette knives (at least two -flexible, triangular and medium-sized), combs, scrappers (some things will be provided to experiment with)
- Rags or shop clothes
- Disposable Palette
- Supports: four 9” x 12” or larger canvas boards; one larger scale canvas, canvas board or gessoed panel for final painting.
