We specialize in art classes and workshops for adults and kids, year round, for every skill level!

The Guelph School of Art ​is a proud member of the Wyndham Art Supplies family.  Our classes and workshops run year-round, with day camps during Winter and March Break and the summer months. We have classes suited to both the beginner and seasoned artist in a range of media and specialties. 
For more than 15 years the Guelph School of Art has reflected the dynamic visual art scene making our city unique. The GSA's team is made up of top notch instructors, many of whom have experience teaching at the university level. All bring passion for the creative process to our  classes.

GSA studio

The school is situated on the 3rd floor of our building at 125 Wyndham Street North, in Downtown Guelph. Our studio space boasts plenty of natural lighting and architectural interest as well as bathroom facilities, a washout station and kitchenette. Since their founding, Gamblin Artists Colors has handcrafted luscious oil colours and contemporary mediums true to the working properties of traditional materials, yet safer and more permanent. Gamblin's dedication to today's oil painters extends beyond offering the finest possible materials – we believe in sharing knowledge so painters can choose those materials that best support their own artistic visions.

Understanding Contemporary Oil Painting Materials, a 90 minute Lecture Demonstration will cover the following:

Colour Mixing – Navigating Colour Space: Gamblin’s practical approach to colour mixing
Artist’s Oil Colors – Gamblin’s approach to colour making
Mineral vs Modern Pigments – How to create a personalized palette of colours
Indirect vs Direct Techniques – Historical application of opaque and transparent colours
FastMatte Alkyd Oil Colors – Benefits and uses of fast-drying, matte oil colours
Painting Mediums – Choosing the right medium, working properties & drying rates
Building Permanent Paintings – Understanding Fat Over Lean
Supports, Sizing and Grounds – How they affect colour and permanence
Gamvar Picture Varnish – Understanding contemporary varnishes & controlling surface quality
Studio Safety - Create without compromise in a safe studio
Colour Theory – 2-dimensional vs 3-dimensional Colour Space
1980 Oil Colors – True Colour. Real Value.

About the Presenter
Phil Irish holds a MFA from York University, and a BA in Fine Art and English Literature from the University of Guelph. He has exhibited extensively across Canada and the United States, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery and the Lonsdale Gallery in Toronto. Phil developed new projects at residencies in Newfoundland, Quebec and the City of Kitchener, and with Oakville Galleries. He has been teaching painting since 1999. www.philirish.com


HOW TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES & WORKSHOPS
Don't let the class you want get cancelled, register early. It is recommended you register at least two weeks prior to the first class. Once we have met our minimum enrollment we are happy to take late registrations should space still be available.

Payment in full is required for registration.

In Person- Visit us at Wyndham Art Supplies, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, Monday through Saturday and 12 - 4 pm on Sundays. We accept cash, debit, gift certificates and VISA & Mastercard.

CLASS CANCELLATIONS/REFUND POLICY

All registrations are considered final sale. We do not offer refunds or credit for dropped classes or classes missed. Make up classes can be arranged for a fee pending instructor and studio availability. We reserve the right to cancel classes that don’t meet our minimum enrollment requirements. In the event of a class cancellation, notice will be given by phone and/or email to students four days prior to start date. Students will be refunded fees in full in this case.

FEES, MATERIALS AND AGE RECOMMENDATIONS

All class fees are subject to applicable taxes. Materials are not included in class fees unless otherwise noted.

It is suggested you refrain from purchasing course materials until we can confirm classes have met minimum registration. Adult classes are suited to those ages 17 and up. In fairness to our instructors and other students, we cannot include those younger than the published age range in any of our classes.
