Sunday March 8th 1:30-4pm
Instructor: Joe Borges
This is a non-digital, non-virtual, hands-on workshop where participants will get inky and print a few copies of a limited-edition poster - yours to keep!
Using two of the most common types of table-top presses, this session provides a general introduction to Letterpress, with a particular emphasis on typography and the art of designing with type. The workshop will include a discussion about kerning techniques and typographic style, and participants will learn how to set and lock up wood and metal type. Additionally, you will explore hand inking methods to achieve that distinct, imperfectly unique print characteristic of Letterpress.
Please note, due to time constraints, the main artwork and text of the poster will be predetermined, and participants will be given the opportunity to modify it with their own typographic contribution.
Please wear comfortable clothes and bring an apron.
Your instructor: Joe Borges, one-half of Pomegranate Letterpress + Design, has been designing for 31 years. In his career as a graphic designer he uses a MAC, with all its digital glory, but he’s always been fascinated with the old school process of hand typesetting and the black art of letterpress.
Letterpress gives him the opportunity to marry two of his passions: Designing and working with his hands. He finds setting letters by hand, tinkering with the press, mixing inks, pulling the lever, and humbly smiling at the finished product extremely rewarding.
