Saturday, February 25th 10am to 1pm
Instructor is Chris Ahlers.
This three-hour workshop covers many of the options available to artists when it comes to preparing a surface to work on. There are lots of good ready-to-use products available, but it's easy to augment, combine, or customize a surface to suit your personal preference or the properties of your medium of choice.
We will cover issues and techniques relevant to painters in oil, acrylic, and watercolour, as well as people working in pencil pastel, ink, mixed media, collage and more. We will talk about working on paper, canvas and panel, with the intent of helping artists make informed decisions about what kind of surface is right for them.
Topics include: flexible vs rigid supports, stretching, sizing and priming canvas, preparing wood panels, mounting canvas and paper to panel, special drawing and painting grounds. There will lots of opportunity for Q & A along the way.
*This workshop includes 2 small birch panels and samples of different papers, grounds and mediums for participants to prepare their own take-home test panels.
Winter Footwear: Please no wet shoes/boots in the GSA. Kindly bring indoor footwear to change into. Masks are optional for this class.
