Material Exploration workshops are a monthly unconventional approach to art-making. Instead of focusing on a particular final product or outcome resulting from a step-by step process of instructions, participants will be provided specialty materials to explore. Through prompts of curiosity and lessons on unconventional artistic methods, the focus will be on the process of creative expression through a shared willingness to experiment.
Participants can rely on a set of consistent materials to work with in addition to rotational specialty mediums. Each workshop will introduce the materials through a warm-up exercise, followed by spaciousness to create freely (with support from the instructor to guide your creative process), and ending with the opportunity to share your artifacts with the group or see what others have made.
This environment is suitable to all creative critters and requires no specific artistic background. That said, this style of workshop may be useful for established artists as respite from the pressures of the fine art world, to renew creative freedoms and
explore new materials.
About the Instructor: Jess has been teaching art for nearly a decade and has an interdisciplinary background in fine art, un-fine art, writing, harm reduction, and is currently a student art therapist enrolled at the Toronto Art Therapy Institute. Jess works in many mediums but most enjoys facilitating spaces for community and creativity through workshops, events, and collaborative projects.
