This beautiful ink is handmade in Guelph by us! The ingredients are: local walnut husks, water, 99% Isopropanol as an antifungal, and a small amount of Gum Arabic to aid with dispersion and flow. Each bottle contains a couple of cloves to improve the aroma and as an added antifungal agent.
This ink is waterbased and can be treated like watercolour. The colour is somewhat staining and granular, as we have left a small amount of fine particulate in the mixture, to help with colour depth.
In a single pass, the ink gives a rich and mellow brown colour, and repeated layers or washes result in a deep sepia. The shelf life of this ink can vary, depending on conditions. If after a year or so it develops an odour, adding some more alcohol can help to preserve it.
While our ink does not have a lightfastness rating, walnut ink is widely understood to have very durable colour.
